Deep-Time Construction
Curated by contemptorary
2018 Capp Street Project Artists-in-Residence
Invited by Leila Grothe

Opening reception: Thursday, May 31, 6:30-8:30pm

Deep-Time Construction brings together artists who create images, text, and archival material to compose films that consider the fabrication of time: from the forging of coloniality, the riots to come, and the potential spaces in between. The exhibition features works by Basel Abbas & Ruanne Abou-Rahme, Lida Abdul, Sky Hopinka, NIC Kay, Asma Kazmi, and Amanda Russhell Wallace.

Deep-time is the scientific term for the earth's existence, denoting its geological epoch. Playing with this notion of a settled time, a measurable time of building, the artists featured in this exhibition challenge the metric of form as it registers in the image. The six time-based works demonstrate the potential and possibility of durational experience—as movement, as distilled, and as configuration and reconfiguration of colonial time and measurement.

As part of the exhibition, a series of essays will be commissioned relating to the artists on view. Nazik Dakkach, Sean D. Henry-Smith, Lindsay Nixon, and Leila Weefur will each contribute individual works, while Aruna D'Souza, Christina Sharpe, and Jennif(f)er Tamayo will contribute thematic essays. All of the writing will be co-published by contemptorary and the Wattis, and will appear on both organizations' websites.
