Paul McCarthy is one of the most influential figures in California's art scene. His performance work of the late 1970s explored issues surrounding the body, often via graphic depictions of taboo subjects. In the 1980s and 1990s he began to exhibit the props from these performances, and his work became increasingly carnivalesque, visceral, and transgressive. In recent years he has devoted himself to large-scale sculptures and major installations that recall theme-park characters and reflect on our consumer-driven society.
